The Minnesota Legislature did not come to an agreement on the state budget before the Constitutional deadline of May 19, so it will need a special session to complete its work. As News Now went to press, timing and how long the session will last is still up in the air.

On May 21, the MMA joined 39 other state medical associations in a joint letter to Congressional leaders strongly urging Congress to reject the $822 billion in Medicaid cuts that are included in the House Budget Reconciliation bill. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that these cuts will result in lost coverage for at least 7.6 million Americans.

The House passed its version of the Health and Human Services (HHS) omnibus budget bill on May 12, and the Senate passed its version two days later. The bills differed greatly but both bodies were able to come to an agreement on May 15.

Legislative leaders from both bodies have been meeting regularly with Gov. Tim Walz to reach an overall agreement on the size of the state budget for the next two-year period. On May 15, Walz and legislative leaders held a press conference to announce they have reached an agreement on overall spending levels for the next biennium.

The House leadership reached agreement earlier this week on a health and human services (HHS) budget for the upcoming two-year period. However, the bill does not include the MMA’s priority to increase Medical Assistance (MA) payments for outpatient services to 100% of the Medicare level.
