There is confusion and many controversies in diet and nutrition. Recently, the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans were released, and in some areas of these guidelines this confusion and controversy has continued. This talk will review the overall background evidence of the influence of diet on health. It will discuss the new Dietary Guidelines in the context of this evidence on health, and discuss practical ways to counsel patients and help them follow a pattern of eating that is practical, realistic, and enjoyable so as to be sustainable and maximally support health.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe general scientific evidence supporting the relationship between diet and health
  • Identify the features of a health supporting diet
  • Recognize the similarities among various dietary guidelines
  • Identify key updates in the most recent dietary guidelines and explain the evidence base supporting those recommendations
