DFL Expands Majority in Minnesota Senate, Breaks Tie to Regain Control of the House

November 5, 2026

Minnesota Democrats had a strong showing on Election Day, November 3, expanding their majority in the Senate, and breaking the two-year tie in the House to regain control of both chambers.

All 201 state legislative seats were up for re-election. Heading into Election Day, the Senate DFL held a one seat majority with 34 Democrats to 33 Republicans, while the House was an even tie with 67 Democrats and 67 Republicans.

Some races will require a recount as they are too close to call, but of the called races, Senate Democrats expanded their control to a 39 – 28 majority, and House Democrats regained control with a 77 – 57 majority.

Sen. Rob Kupec (DFL – Moorhead) may be the only DFL incumbent to lose re-election, although his four-vote deficit to Republican Austin Peterson will require a recount, per state election laws. Other races triggering automatic recounts include Rep. Nolan West (R – Blaine), who won re-election by 22 votes, and Sen. Karin Housley (R – Stillwater), who won re-election by 40 votes.

All DFL candidates for state constitutional offices won, including U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who will serve as the state’s first female governor.

Physicians Win Seats in State Legislature and Congress

Several physicians had notable victories on Election Day:

  • Krish Subrahmanian, MD, a pediatrician and DFL candidate from Eden Prairie, was elected to the Minnesota Senate, representing District 49.

  • Jonathan Claussen, MD, a recently retired family medicine physician and Republican candidate from Staples, was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives, representing District 5B.

  • Hunter Cantrell, who previously served in the Minnesota House from 2019 to 2021 as a DFL member from Burnsville, and current medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School, was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives, representing District 55B. Cantrell recently served on the MMA’s Board of Trustees.

  • DFL Congresswoman Kelly Morrison, MD, was re-elected to a second term, representing Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District.

Scott Jensen, MD, was unsuccessful in his campaign as the Republican candidate for State Auditor, losing to DFL candidate Zack Filipovich.

The 2027 legislative session begins January 12.
