Allina Physicians at Mercy Hospital Announce Intention to Strike

Allina Health physicians at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids and Fridley have announced that they plan to strike September 14-17.  

In July, the physicians represented by Doctors Council SEIU voted by a 90% margin to authorize a strike after nearly two years of bargaining.  

The physicians at Allina's Mercy and Unity hospitals have been seeking better wages, benefits, a greater voice in decision-making, including in the implementation of artificial intelligence, and for Allina to dissolve its noncompete agreements since they voted to unionize in 2023. 

“Our goal is to finalize contracts that continue to fairly compensate our providers with market competitive wages and benefits — yet economic discussions must coexist with the reality of significant uncertainty and financial pressures related to rising costs and declining reimbursement for the care we deliver," Allina said on its website.  

The union must provide Allina 10 days’ notice before striking, which they did on September 4.  

Allina is currently talking with California-based Sutter Health about a merger between the two health systems.
