Medicare to Launch AI Prior Authorization Pilot Program

Starting January 1, 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will launch a pilot program that will a) apply new prior authorization requirements to select services for traditional Medicare enrollees in six states and b) hire private companies to use AI in prior authorization determinations.  

AMA Board Votes to Only Support ACIP Recommendations Made Prior to May 1, 2025

At the September AMA Board of Trustees meeting, the Board voted to support the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions’ (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations made prior to May 1, 2025, as well as national medical specialty society recommendations on vaccines.  

Survey: Physicians’ Burnout Declining, Stress and Anxiety Increasing

On September 17, The Physicians Foundation announced findings from its 2025 Wellbeing Survey of America’s Physicians, revealing a troubling paradox: while reported burnout has declined from last year, physicians’ stress and anxiety have risen to levels not seen since the height of the pandemic.

A special election to fill the seat left open following the assassination of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman is scheduled for September 16. The election for House District 34B includes Brooklyn Park and parts of Coon Rapids. 

Minnesota Physicians Urge Gov. Walz to Call Special Session to Address Firearm Violence

The MMA and five other physician advocacy organizations sent a letter to Gov. Tim Walz, on September 5 urging him to call a special legislative session to “pass legislation to address the devastating death and injuries from firearms and gun violence.”
