WARNING: Increase In Scams Targeting Physicians Across the Country

November 9, 2023

State medical associations across the country are reporting an increase in scams targeting physicians. These scammers typically pose as representatives of law enforcement, a licensing board, or U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents and tell the target that they need to pay a fee to avoid arrest or disciplinary action.

These scams have become so prevalent that the FBI and regulatory agencies are issuing warnings to physicians and other medical providers.

Be wary of any phone call demanding urgent information or requiring any form of payment. The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (BMP) does not contact physicians by telephone to demand urgent information, inform them that their license has been suspended, or that they are the subject of a complaint or investigation. A legitimate letter from the BMP would provide details of a pending hearing.

Additionally, a law enforcement agent of any kind will not contact a physician by telephone to demand immediate payment or personal information. If you receive such a call, do not pay the demanded fee or provide any personal information.

If you believe that you have been the target of a scam similar to those listed above, you should immediately file a complaint with the police and notify the Attorney General’s Office at 651-296-3353 (in the Twin Cities) or 800-657-3787 (outside the Twin Cities).
