U.S. Officially Withdraws from WHO

January 30, 2026

Last week (January 22) the United States officially withdrew from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Trump Administration had warned a year ago that it had intended to leave the group. The joint congressional resolution that marked the start of the U.S.'s partnership with WHO in 1948 dictated that a year's notice was needed if the U.S. chose to withdraw.

The AMA has fully supported the U.S.'s involvement with WHO, and spoke out against cutting funding to WHO back in 2020 during the pandemic.
