University of Minnesota, UMP and Fairview Finalize Agreement

June 11, 2026

On June 9, the University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP) and Fairview Health Services finalized an agreement on funding for the university's healthcare programs, including the medical school.

The deal is pending approval by the university's Board of Regents, and the boards of both UMP and Fairview. Assuming that takes place, the agreement will take effect in January 2027.

The agreement will allow the university to continue training physicians through its medical school, and conduct vital research at Fairview facilities. The agreement also calls for phasing out the "M Health Fairview" brand.

More than 1 million people receive care annually in the Fairview system, which includes 1,500 physicians — of whom 1,200 are University of Minnesota faculty physicians — and 500 advanced practice providers affiliated with M Physicians, along with 1,100 physicians and 400 advanced practice providers affiliated with Fairview and other providers in Fairview clinics.

The University of Minnesota Medical School trains approximately 70 percent of all physicians in Minnesota.
