UCare To Close, Shift Customers to Medica in 2026

November 20, 2025

After 40 years in business, the nonprofit health insurer UCare is closing next year, leaving 1,450 employees out of work.

Its 300,000 Minnesota and western Wisconsin customers, mostly enrollees of Medicaid and ACA benefits, will transfer to Medica.

"Under the terms of the agreement, subject to customary conditions to closing including the receipt of required regulatory approvals, individuals enrolled in UCare’s 2026 Medicaid and Individual and Family Plans will continue to receive services without interruption," the nonprofits announced in a joint release on November 17.

UCare had announced earlier this year that it would not offer Medicare Advantage plans in 2026.
