State Holds First AI in Healthcare Work Group Meeting

December 18, 2025

On December 15, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH)’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Work Group held its first meeting.

The charge of the work group is to "identify AI health-related activities, workforce training opportunities, partners and collaborations, and resources to create consensus on next steps for the Minnesota e-Health Initiative’s pursuit of safe, ethical, trustworthy, and effective use of AI across the care continuum."

Former MMA President David Thorson, MD, will serve on the group.

The formation of this AI work group comes 11 months after the MMA formed its own task force to examine AI's role in Minnesota healthcare. The MMA's task force is looking at transparency in the use of AI, potential bias in the use of AI, liability considerations, and clinical decision-making.

Deliverables for the state’s work group include:

  • Summary of current AI use by some partners in the care continuum in Minnesota.

  • Compilation of AI resources for the care continuum.

  • High-level plan for how the Minnesota e-Health Initiative can engage, learn, and act with key AI-related collaborations, partners, and activities.

  • Outline of key recommendations, guidance, tools and use cases for adopting an AI framework for the care continuum in Minnesota.

The work group will hold public meetings, with virtual participation capability, every four to six weeks through June of 2026.
