The next MMA Physician Forum will be held on Wednesday, September 10, from noon to 1 pm on “Increasing Access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) in Jails.” The forum is being presented in partnership with the Minnesota Office of Addiction & Recovery, and the Minnesota Chapter of the American College of Physicians.
Over the last year, the MMA and Minnesota Sheriff’s Association (MSA) have co-chaired a workgroup that included people working in the jails, sheriffs, local correction officers, healthcare providers, and others, to identify current barriers to providing MOUD, possible solutions, and identifying connections that can be made to support these efforts.
A panel will share results from the workgroup, including the challenges of delivering appropriate care in correctional settings, the new challenges that present once an individual has left the correctional setting, and the pivotal role that primary care physicians can play in this space.
Panelists include Shiela Klemmetsen, MD, Essentia Health; Jessica Pete, St. Louis County Jail; and Carl White, Red Lake Nation. The forum will be moderated by Tyler Winkelman, MD, MSc, Hennepin Healthcare.
