Senate Passes MMA-Supported Gun Violence Prevention Bill, Unlikely to Pass House

May 7, 2026

On May 4, the Minnesota Senate passed a comprehensive gun violence prevention package on a party-line 34–33 vote. The legislation includes a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, along with additional public safety measures. This is a legislative priority for the MMA.

The MMA strongly supports the bill (SF 4067, Mohamed, DFL – Minneapolis) and has been a leading advocate for policies that prohibit the sale and possession of assault weapons and high-powered semi-automatic firearms, as well as a statewide ban on high-capacity magazines.

Firearm violence remains a significant public health crisis, with firearms being the leading cause of death among children and teens ages 1–19 in the United States, underscoring the urgent need for evidence-based prevention strategies.

In addition to firearm restrictions, the legislation includes significant investments in prevention and safety, allocating $20 million for school safety initiatives, and an additional $17 million for mental health programs aimed at addressing the root causes of firearm-related violence.

The bill now advances to the Minnesota House, which is evenly divided (67–67). Given unified Republican opposition and the tied chamber, the proposal faces significant challenges and is unlikely to advance this session.
