August 27, 2026

A group of Minnesota residents and fellows gathered outside the University of Minnesota Medical Center on August 24 demanding their first contract, something they've been bargaining for since last September.

On March 24, 2025, nearly 1,000 residents and fellows at the University of Minnesota filed to unionize with the SEIU’s (Service Employees International Union) Committee of Interns and Residents, which is the country’s largest union of trainee physicians, representing more than 34,000 interns, residents, and fellows.

According to KARE-TV, the group of residents and fellows is seeking fair pay and mental health benefits.

A statement from the University of Minnesota to KARE-TV said: “the University has bargained in good faith and is committed to reaching an agreement that continues the high-quality training environment that prepares the next generation of healthcare providers.”
