Resident Unions at University of Minnesota, Hennepin Healthcare Become Reality

May 15, 2025

More than 1,000 physician residents at the University of Minnesota and Hennepin Healthcare have unionized with SEIU’s (Service Employees International Union) Committee of Interns and Residents.

SEIU's Committee of Interns and Residents is the country’s largest union of trainee physicians, representing more than 34,000 interns, residents, and fellows.

Residents from both the University of Minnesota and Hennepin Healthcare say they are understaffed and underpaid.

Both the University of Minnesota and Hennepin Healthcare released statements when the groups first started exploring unionization earlier this year saying the physician trainees are valued and the organizations recognize the trainees’ right to organize.
