Noontime Forum to Tackle Climate Change and Health Equity on June 14

June 8, 2023

The MMA is teaming up with the University of Minnesota to host a virtual physician forum titled “Health Equity on a Hotter Earth: What Clinicians Need to Know” from noon to 1 pm on June 14.

This forum will review how clinicians can identify patients who are at-risk of extreme heat-related health concerns, how we can counsel patients on preventative health behaviors, and what evidence-based resources are currently available for coping with extreme heat.

Learning objectives for the forum include:
1. Understand the impact of extreme heat on physical and mental health
2. Counsel patients on adaptive behaviors that reduce heat-health impacts.
3. Advocate for system change to reduce fossil fuel use and improve heat-resilience for frontline communities.

The discussion will feature: Vishnu Laalitha Surapaneni, MD, MPH, assistant professor of hospital medicine at the University of Minnesota; and Kristi White, PhD, LP, ABPP, clinical health psychologist and assistant professor in the department of medicine at the University of Minnesota. Serving as moderator is Andrew Olson, MD, associate professor of medicine and pediatrics, section head of hospital medicine, and director of medical education research and innovation at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
