Lisa Mattson, MD, FACOG, has been elected as the MMA’s president-elect in this year’s leadership election, which was held electronically during August.
Amrit Singh, MBBS, was re-elected as a trustee. He also serves as the organization’s secretary-treasurer.
Hunter Cantrell won the contested election for the medical student trustee.
Two incumbent members of the Minnesota delegation to the AMA were also re-elected:
John Abenstein, MD, delegate
Laurel Ries, MD, alternate delegate
Board member terms begin October 1, 2023, and AMA delegation terms begin January 1, 2024.
This year’s ballot also included a Board of Trustees-recommended change to the MMA Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. The proposed bylaws change was approved 85% to 15%.
The change grants the board the authority to amend the bylaws with a majority vote, subject to an advance 30-day member notice and comment period. This change aligns with governance best practices that place authority for bylaws changes with organization fiduciaries, which in MMA’s case are the elected trustees and officers. The proposed bylaws change preserves MMA’s history of transparency and member input via an advance 30-day member notice and comment period on any future bylaws changes.
Thank you to the MMA members who voted in this year’s election. If you or someone you know is interested in future MMA leadership positions, please contact Janet Silversmith, MMA CEO.
