MN Attorney General Urges U of M, Fairview and UMP to Finalize Agreement
April 9, 2026
On April 6, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison urged the University of Minnesota, Fairview Health Services, and University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP) to complete "definitive bilateral agreements" that they had agreed to in January.
The three groups reached a 10-year framework agreement on January 26 and agreed to a March 31 deadline to complete the three definitive agreements, which they've missed.
Fairview and UMP have finalized their definitive agreement, and Fairview, and the University of Minnesota are close to finalizing their academic affiliation agreement. The final definitive agreement at the root of Ellison’s frustration is between the University of Minnesota and UMP. The 10-year mediated agreement is supposed to provide funding support for the University of Minnesota Medical School, including the training of future physicians and care providers, and support for its acclaimed medical research programs.
The agreement also ensures continuity of care between patients and their physicians and care providers, and secures patient access to world-class services at Fairview facilities on the University of Minnesota campus and throughout the Twin Cities.
In a statement, Ellison called on all parties "to work collaboratively and refrain from public criticism or attacks that in the past have had a destabilizing effect on patients, physicians, and funders. I encourage all parties to refrain from such attacks and instead address their concerns directly with those affected in a diplomatic and respectful way, given the enduring importance of these relationships."
