MMA Supports Bill to Authorize Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant Licensure

April 16, 2026

On April 13, the House Health Finance and Policy Committee held an informational hearing on legislation that would establish a licensure framework for Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs) and authorize them to practice in Minnesota.

The MMA submitted a letter of support for HF 4460 (Huot, DFL – Rosemount), emphasizing that Minnesota is currently excluded from a rapidly growing national CAA workforce due to lack of statutory authorization. With 23 accredited CAA training programs nationwide producing highly trained clinicians each year, current law limits Minnesota’s ability to recruit these professionals, further straining the state’s anesthesia workforce.

The legislation was also supported by the American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Minnesota Ambulatory Surgery Center Association. Supporters highlighted that authorizing CAAs would help address increasing demand for surgical services and ongoing workforce shortages, while maintaining high standards of patient care. Integrating CAAs into care teams is seen to expand capacity and improve access to anesthesia services, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology opposed the bill.

The hearing was informational only. No action taken on the bill. The Senate companion, SF 4517, has not yet been heard in committee.
