As part of its commitment to promoting an anti-racist culture in medicine, the MMA has developed an Inclusive Communication Guide, which is now available online.
“The words we use can either promote a culture of respect and inclusion or perpetuate harm toward marginalized individuals and communities,” said MMA President Laurel Ries, MD, “As language and culture change over time, it is our responsibility to stay up to date on best practices for communicating about health equity.”
The guide will enable more inclusive communication by providing suggested language, guidance, and explanatory context. It is designed to encourage users to think critically about the words they use, the meaning conveyed, and their potential impact.
