Minnesota Physician Announces Run for Congress

November 9, 2023

State Sen. Kelly Morrison, MD, an OBGYN and MMA member, announced on November 9 that she is running for Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District. She joins one other Democrat running for Rep. Dean Phillips’ seat after Phillips launched his presidential campaign in October.

Morrison has served in the Minnesota Legislature since 2019 and has worked on numerous health-related legislative issues. She’s championed multiple MMA legislative priorities in her time, including issues related to prior authorization reform, reproductive healthcare, mental health and wellbeing, lowering costs of prescription drugs, and increasing access to affordable healthcare for Minnesotans. Morrison has also been featured multiple times at MMA’s Day at the Capitol and at several MMA advocacy events.

“She has been fantastic to work with at the Capitol. She would make a great Congresswoman if she gets the opportunity,” said Chad Fahning, MMA’s manager of legislative affairs. “In her time in St. Paul, she’s earned a reputation for collaboration and bipartisanship.”

Morrison served her first two terms in the Minnesota House before winning her Senate seat in 2022. She has historically won tightly contested elections in politically diverse districts. She won her 2018 and 2020 elections by only 216 and 313 votes respectively before winning her current seat in the Minnesota Senate by more than 6,000 votes.

Morrison is a native Minnesotan. She received her undergraduate degree from Yale University and her medical degree at Case Western University School of Medicine.
