Legislature Recognizes MMA Physician for Humanitarian Award

On May 6, the Minnesota Senate and House of Representatives recognized Dave Tilstra, MD, as the recipient of the 2025 MMA Foundation/Copic Humanitarian Award, which recognizes Minnesota physicians whose leadership, volunteerism, and service improve the health and well-being of their communities.  

Tilstra was recognized for his longstanding work advancing community health initiatives across Minnesota, including Feeling Good Minnesota, which focuses on health through nutrition, physical activity, and community design. His efforts have helped expand access to sidewalks, bike lanes, and other ways for Minnesotans to stay active. Tilstra has also championed initiatives to improve access to affordable and healthy foods in schools, workplaces, and communities, helping create systems that make healthy choices are easier and more accessible for everyone.

As part of the award, recipients direct a $10,000 charitable contribution from Copic to a cause of their choice. Tilstra designated funding to support genetic testing for patients who cannot otherwise afford it. 

Presented annually by the MMA Foundation and Copic, the award highlights physicians who demonstrate exceptional commitment to humanitarian service and improving the lives of patients and communities across Minnesota.

Senate Passes MMA-Supported Gun Violence Prevention Bill, Unlikely to Pass House

On May 4, the Minnesota Senate passed a comprehensive gun violence prevention package on a party-line 34–33 vote. The legislation includes a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, along with additional public safety measures. This is a legislative priority for the MMA. 

MMA Organizes Compromise Regarding APRN Scope of Practice

After significant advocacy and engagement efforts, the MMA was able to convince lawmakers to pass an amended bill regarding Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) training.
