July 8 Forum to Elevate the Voices of Black Physicians
June 30, 2022
The MMA and the Minnesota Association of African American Physicians will host a physician forum on Friday, July 8 at noon to elevate the voices of Black physicians.
This free, virtual forum will offer an opportunity for physicians and physicians-in-training to hear the voices and stories of Black physicians who will discuss the following:
-
Highlight the experience and contributions of Black physicians in medicine today.
-
How has the exclusion of Black physicians contributed to today’s health inequities – what steps are needed to remedy this?
-
What is needed to uplift and empower Black physicians? How would this advance health equity?
-
How can we create pathways for racial reconciliation, and why is this important?
-
What is the role for physicians in the work of advancing racial equity in healthcare?
-
What training, education, and resources will help physicians to better understand these issues and become leaders in this work?
Learning objectives for the forum include:
1) Discover how racism has shaped the experience of Black physicians?
2) Explore the connection between the exclusion of physicians of color in medicine and health inequities.
3) Evaluate how physicians can work to create pathways for racial reconciliation.
4) Learn about training, education, and resources that can help you better understand racial and ethnic inequities, and how to become leaders in this work.
The forum will include Aletha Maybank, MD, MPH, the AMA’s chief health equity officer and senior vice president; Rachel Villanueva, MD, president, National Medical Association (NMA); and Zeke McKinney, MD, MHI, MPH, FACOEM, program director, HealthPartners Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency.
