House Speaker to Address Physicians' Day at Capitol

Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman will be the guest speaker at this year’s Physicians’ Day at the Capitol on February 28.  

Hortman entered the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2005 and has won reelection every term since. She was elected as leader of the House DFL Caucus in 2017 and has been Speaker of the House since 2019.

Under her leadership, the Minnesota House passed historic healthcare measures in recent sessions, including 2023 which saw numerous legislative successes including increased access to health services, firearm safety reform, and reproductive healthcare access among others. 

Hortman is a Minnesota native, growing up in Fridley before attending Boston University. She earned her JD from the University of Minnesota Law School and an MPA from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Public Affairs. She lives in Brooklyn Park, where she worked as an assistant county attorney for Hennepin County. 

The program for Physicians’ Day at the Capitol is from 1 to 2 pm on February 28 at the State Capitol. The program will be followed by meetings with legislators from 2 to 4 pm. Find additional information and registration here

The AMA is encouraging physicians to contact their U.S. senators and urge them to revise the reconciliation bill passed recently by the U.S. House of Representatives. While the bill includes language that would stabilize Medicare physician payments, it also threatens to cripple Medicaid and CHIP.
