Governor’s Office Appoints 3 Physicians to BMP

July 28, 2022

Gov. Tim Walz’s office has appointed three new physicians to the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (BMP).

They include:

  • Peter Henry, MD, for the 8th Congressional District. Henry is the chief medical officer and practices emergency medicine for Essentia Health.

  • Kristina Krohn, MD, for the at-large seat. Krohn was one of two applicants whose application was endorsed by the MMA. Krohn practices internal medicine and is a pediatric hospitalist at M Health Fairview. She is also an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota.

  • Bruce Sutor, MD, for the 1st Congressional District. Sutor is the chief resident for the department of psychiatry and psychology at the Mayo Clinic.

Three new public board members were also appointed: Stephanie Bumgardner, MSW, LICSW, RPT, Karen Thullner, and Averi Turner.

There is a physician opening for the 7th Congressional District which comprises much of western Minnesota. Interested physicians should apply on the Minnesota Secretary of State website

MMA members who wish to apply are encouraged to contact the MMA for endorsement consideration. According to Minnesota statute, the governor may appoint members to the board from the list of persons recommended by the MMA, as well as from among other qualified candidates.

Physicians desiring MMA endorsement should apply on the Secretary of State website and then email a duplicate copy of their application materials along with their curriculum vitae to Steph Lindgren, MMA policy counsel.

The board licenses and registers physicians, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, acupuncturists, athletic trainers, genetic counselors, naturopaths, and traditional midwives; and enforces the relevant practice acts. Successful applicants are expected to devote one business day and one Saturday per month, plus preparation time.
