Free Webinar Teaches Clinics How to Bill for Community Health Worker Services

July 25, 2024

On June 5, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) held and recorded a webinar that teaches providers and clinic administrators how to bill for services provided by community health workers (CHWs) in Minnesota.

The webinar includes the following objectives:

  • Describe the role, scope, and training of CHWs in Minnesota

  • Describe new Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) billing codes and services for CHWs

  • Describe opportunities for billing for CHW services through Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP), and

  • Locate resources for billing information for Medicare and MCHP coverage for CHW services.

According to the webinar, a CHW is a “frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the CHW to serve as a link between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.”

The MMA’s Equity in Access & Quality (EAQ) Committee is currently developing MMA policy recommendations that aim to improve the size, sustainability, and efficacy of the CHW workforce in Minnesota. A central piece of those recommendations will touch on payment models and/or grant programs that facilitate the direct hire of CHWs by clinics.
