On June 5, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) held and recorded a webinar that teaches providers and clinic administrators how to bill for services provided by community health workers (CHWs) in Minnesota.
The webinar includes the following objectives:
Describe the role, scope, and training of CHWs in Minnesota
Describe new Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) billing codes and services for CHWs
Describe opportunities for billing for CHW services through Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP), and
Locate resources for billing information for Medicare and MCHP coverage for CHW services.
According to the webinar, a CHW is a “frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the CHW to serve as a link between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.”
The MMA’s Equity in Access & Quality (EAQ) Committee is currently developing MMA policy recommendations that aim to improve the size, sustainability, and efficacy of the CHW workforce in Minnesota. A central piece of those recommendations will touch on payment models and/or grant programs that facilitate the direct hire of CHWs by clinics.
