CDC Adopts ACIP’s Revised Recommendation on HBV Vaccinations for Newborns
December 18, 2025
On December 16, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) followed the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice’s (ACIP) lead, and adopted the Hepatitis B Vaccine (HBV) recommendation to end the practice of vaccinating all newborns for HBV.
“This new recommendation is not based on scientific evidence,” said MMA President Lisa Mattson, MD. “We support the evidence-based guidance provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), which supports giving a birth dose of the vaccine to all infants.”
The vaccine, as it has been used for the past 30 years, is a proven way to reduce HBV transmission and death. Delaying the first dose leaves infants vulnerable to both undiagnosed maternal infection and HBV exposure after birth.
