AMA Urges Docs to Protect Medicaid by Contacting Congress

May 29, 2025

The AMA is encouraging physicians to contact their U.S. senators and urge them to revise the reconciliation bill passed recently by the U.S. House of Representatives. While the bill includes language that would stabilize Medicare physician payments, it also threatens to cripple Medicaid and CHIP.

The House version significantly impacts rural and underserved areas. The bill also affects medical school loans and loan forgiveness programs.

The AMA urges physicians “to contact your senators today and urge them to improve the reconciliation bill by:

  • Preserving access to Medicaid and ACA coverage for eligible individuals

  • Protecting medical education loan and forgiveness programs to strengthen the future physician workforce

  • Including support for long-term, inflation-adjusted Medicare payment reform
