Allina Health Physicians Stage One-Day Strike

November 6, 2025

A group of Allina Health physicians held a one-day strike to protest working conditions on November 5 at various Allina locations in Minnesota.

The walkout is being called the largest of its kind in U.S. history. It’s also the first physician strike in the state.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, “about 50 negotiating sessions have taken place,” including two since the physicians announced their intention to strike.

“We are committed to continuing to provide safe, high-quality care during this time. Our contingency plans are in place, which include working with the more than 25% of providers represented by the union who chose to work,” Allina said in a statement. “With the cost of care climbing for patients and health care systems and anticipated cuts in government funding, it would be irresponsible for either party to agree to a contract that adds significant new expenses that will undermine access and increase costs to those who pay for care.”

The Allina physicians formed the SEIU (Service Employees International Union) -affiliated Doctors Council in 2023. The physicians have argued that they are being asked to do too much, to see too many patients without adequate support, and consequently many are feeling burned out and leaving the profession.

“The MMA supports the right of physicians and physicians-in-training to engage in collective bargaining,” said MMA President Lisa Mattson, MD. “It is unfortunate that Allina and its outpatient physicians and other clinicians have been unable to reach an agreement that could have averted the strike. Among the challenges facing physicians at Allina and elsewhere are unrelenting administrative burdens that contribute to burnout, professional dissatisfaction, early retirement, and, in worse cases, self-harm.”
