Hennepin Healthcare Residents Explore Unionizing
March 13, 2025
Residents at Hennepin Healthcare filed for union recognition on March 12, saying that they are understaffed and underpaid, among other concerns, according to a report by KARE-TV.
The Hennepin Healthcare residents are working with the Committee of Interns and Residents, which is the country’s largest union of resident and fellow physicians, representing more than 34,000 interns, residents, and fellows.
“We came to Hennepin specifically because we wanted to work in a safety net hospital caring for this community, and so all of the residents care so deeply and dive headfirst into our work,” said Nicole Lund, MD, in a press release released to the television station. “But we are stretched so thin, and the truth is, it doesn’t have to be this way.”
"Our institution deeply values our residents and their contributions to patient care, medical education, and research," Hennepin Healthcare said in a statement to KARE-TV. "We are committed to providing a supportive learning environment, fair compensation, and the necessary resources to help our trainees thrive in their careers. We recognize their legal right to consider union representation, and we respect their right to make this decision."
