New Reporting Requirements Could Impact Minnesota Physicians

January 25, 2024

The National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) has notified the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (BMP) that it must begin reporting all agreements for corrective action dating back to the beginning of 2020.

The NPDB has given the BMP a deadline of January 31 to complete all reporting or it will risk fines or other federal action. The BMP is currently sending notification letters to impacted physicians.

Historically, the BMP has not been required to report these agreements to the NPDB, instead relying on a Minnesota statute stating that these agreements are not disciplinary in nature.

The MMA is working to understand how and if there is a way to correct this reinterpretation by the NPDB and will provide updates as the situation unfolds.

This is a significant change in how reporting is handled in Minnesota. The MMA feels this is unfair to Minnesota physicians who signed agreements for corrective action with the understanding that doing so would not result in a report to the NPDB.
