MAPS Mentorship Program is Recruiting Mentors for 2022-2023
October 6, 2022
The MMA and the Minority Association of Pre-medical Students (MAPS) at the University of Minnesota are once again recruiting mentors.
Knowing that many pre-medical students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, may lack access to physician mentors, the MMA has partnered with MAPS to lend a hand.
Given the long history of racism in medicine and the need to address racism as a public health crisis, Minnesota’s physicians should commit to anti-racist educational, recruitment, and clinical practices. One important area in creating a more equitable health system is mentoring students from marginalized communities, with the goal of increasing diversity in healthcare fields. Patients receive better care when their medical providers reflect their own communities.
The main goal of the MAPS mentorship program is to develop a meaningful long-term mentorship between pre-med students and physicians. In order to do so, these are the expectations of the program:
-
The mentorship should last a minimum of one year. At the end of the year, the mentor-mentee pair may continue their mentorship together if desired.
-
The time commitment is flexible and will ultimately be left up to the mentor-mentee pair, but meetings should ideally occur every one to two months to develop meaningful mentorships. (Virtual or phone meetings are ok.)
-
Mentors are willing and able to offer advice about the application and interview process, as well as future educational and career goals.
-
Mentor-mentee pairs will uphold the values of mutual respect and cultural humility, and work to maintain a safe space for both parties.
If you are interested in being a mentor, please sign up here.
You will be paired with a pre-medical student as they register, so the timing of when you start may vary depending on demand. Thank you for your patience and generosity!
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Jenny Zhang or MAPS.
