Group of Allina Health Physicians Vote to Unionize

October 19, 2023

A group of urgent and emergency care physicians and advanced practice professionals at Allina Health have voted 325 to 200 to unionize, as announced on October 13.

Earlier this summer, physicians with Allina called the move toward unionizing a necessary step to ensure patients get the best care possible. The vote needs to be certified by the National Labor Relations Board. If certified, the Allina group would become the largest private-sector physician union in the country.

At a press conference in mid-August, several Allina physicians said they feel joining a union is needed to ensure that patients’ needs are met. Physicians, they argued, are being asked to do too much, to see too many patients without adequate support, and consequently many are feeling burned out and leaving the profession.

In a statement following the vote, Allina Health said: “While we are disappointed in the decision by some of our providers to be represented by a union, we remain committed to our ongoing work to create a culture where all employees feel supported and valued.”
