Driver and Vehicle Services Medical Review Board Seeking Physician Volunteers

January 30, 2025

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) is seeking physician volunteers to serve on a medical review board established under Minnesota statute.

The board is an offshoot of the DPS' policy for overseeing the licensing of people subject to loss of consciousness or vision requirements. Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) wants the board to review case files and determine whether DVS is handling cases appropriately and confirm whether individuals in question can operate a motor vehicle safely.

DVS is specifically seeking physicians in specialties that see patients with vision or loss of consciousness issues. There are approximately 16 to 20 cases per year and a requested 30-day timeframe to review cases.

Additional questions about the medical review board can be directed to either Mary Beth Engfer, DVS driver compliance program manager, or Nicole Neft, DVS driver improvement specialist supervisor.

If interested in volunteering, please reach out to Steph Lindgren, JD, MMA policy counsel.
