Medical Students Ask Legislators About Health Care Policy

Sen. John Marty (DFL – Roseville) and Rep. Nick Zerwas (R – Elk River) fielded questions on health care policy during a Jan. 2 “Health Policy Panel Discussion,” which was part of a course for University of Minnesota third- and fourth-year medical students entitled “Becoming a Doctor.”
The course, which is being offered for the first time, is an “integrated, longitudinal, on-campus required educational activity focused on empowering students to transition successfully and resiliently into the role of physician.” The course includes programming to help medical students become physicians who are effective advocates for their profession and their patients.

Marty (center) and Zerwas fielded questions from Star Tribune health care reporter Christopher Snowbeck (left) and the audience. Topics included single payer health care, prescription drug pricing, electronic medical records and other topics.
