COVID-19 and Health Equity

  • Purchase session
  • Many barriers, including social factors such as unjust conditions in society, employment status, residential segregation and economic instability, stand in the way of our Black, Latinx, indigenous and immigrant communites having optimal health outcomes, and thus they experience higher rates of chronic disease, injury and violence.  These social determinants of health are some of the key factors driving how COVID-19 is impacting our Black, Latinx, indigenous and immigrant communities. This session will dive deep into some of the root causes of health inequities, and examine how the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted longstanding health inequities among these communities, both in Minnesota and across the U.S.

The Journey to Treat COVID-19

  • Purchase session
  • During this session, we will examine the clinical side of COVID-19.  Hear from experts from across Minnesota who have been working to develop tests, therapeutics, and vaccines in the race against this unprecedented pandemic.

Addressing the Challenges of Viewing Medicine Through a Race-Based Lens

  • Purchase session
  • In 2020, the MMA adopted policy that (1) recognized that race is a social construct and is distinct from ethnicity; (2) demonstrated MMA’s support for ending the practice of using race as a proxy for biology or genetics in medical education, research, and clinical practice; and (3) recommended that the experience of racism and social determinants of health be used when describing risk factors for disease. This session will examine race in medicine from a clinical perspective and assess how physicians can more effectively make clinical decisions – without the need for a race-based lens.

The Case for Equity in Healthcare

  • Purchase session
  • This presentation will examine common barriers to addressing equity in healthcare and provide a series of compelling arguments for enacting true and measurable changes to healthcare which support equity – not only for healthcare workforce, but, importantly, changes which affect the entire healthcare ecosystem and include those of our patients and their health outcomes.
