Preventing Death and Disease Caused by Tobacco

The MMA proudly and actively supported passage of the Freedom to Breathe Act in 2007. Since then, we have continued to lend our support to efforts (both state and local) to raise awareness of the dangers related to smoking, as well as efforts to protect our youth from a lifetime of addiction.

We’ve supported legislation to increase the amount that tobacco is taxed.  This is one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking (and other tobacco use), especially among youth.

Letters of Support (Tobacco 21, Flavor Restrictions)

The MMA provided letters to the mayor and city council members of the cities listed below. The cities with an asterisk were successful in their tobacco restriction efforts. The letters, signed by the current MMA President, demonstrated MMA’s goal of making Minnesotans the healthiest in the nation, and voiced MMA’s support for communities who are doing their part to reduce the use of tobacco, and ensure that adolescents and young adults do not start to smoke.
