St. Mary's Health Clinic

St. Mary’s Health Clinics provides free medical care, outreach and education to low-income, uninsured families and individuals who are not eligible for government programs.  SMHC was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Paul Province, ( upon the belief that healthcare is a basic human right. SMHC works with hundreds of compassionate, caring, and gifted volunteers. SMHC also conducts health promotion, health screening, health education, and outreach in collaboration with community organizations and advocates for healthcare as a basic human right while assisting low-income people to find affordable healthcare coverage.

SMHC provides direct care to uninsured and underinsured within the Twin Cities metropolitan area at community-based clinics. These clinics are located in spaces donated by churches, schools, and community centers in the metropolitan area.

Volunteers needed:


The volunteer physician provides comprehensive primary medical care to both well and ill patients, manages and directs care in collaboration with the clinic health care team, and facilitates referrals to providers and facilities outside St. Mary’s Health Clinics. Physicians must have a current Minnesota MD/NP license, as required by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice.

Non-physician volunteers are also needed including nurse practitioners, nurses, admissions-front desk, interpreters (primarily Spanish), and clinic office help.

Time commitment:

Most volunteers serve 1 to 4 times per month.

Locations and Clinic Hours:

Clinics are held Monday through Thursday, mostly afternoons, some mornings. There are 7 clinic sites throughout the metro, including locations in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Shakopee, Fridley, and Apple Valley.


All volunteering physicians and nurse practitioners must be credentialed and board certified to practice in Minnesota.


Medical Records:

St. Mary’s uses paper records. Physicians enter all patient notes but assistance can be provided.

Professional liability insurance:

St. Mary’s Health Clinics is able to provide malpractice insurance coverage to all physician volunteers.
