Letter Asks Congress to Transition to Better Medicare Program

Date: 18-10-2012

[MMA News Now, Oct. 18, 2012] The MMA, along with the AMA, more than 60 health care organizations and the other state medical associations, sent a letter to Congressional leaders asking them to follow a set of principles as they transition from the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) to a higher performing Medicare program.

Letters were sent on Oct. 15 to the chairs and ranking members of the Senate Committee on Finance, the House Ways and Means Committee, and the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

On Jan. 1, 2013, physicians who care for Medicare patients face a 27 percent pay cut due to the SGR payment formula.

On Oct. 9, MMA members were asked to send an Action Alert to their U.S. Senators and Representatives to petition them to eliminate SGR.

MD - solo rural physician

I so much appreciate someone / a formal proposal like this.....finally remembering that many of us simply cannot be expected to keep up with all of the government and insurance industry "mandates" ("meaningful use", EMR, e-scripts, Medical Home involvement, and mandatory reporting of patient data ot the state, etc...). We practice excellent, very up to date, quite standard of care medicine in locations, and under circumstances, that simply do not allow for these "top down" management measures. We need a LEGISLATIVE GUARANTEE called the FREEDOM TO PRACTICE ACT....that allows private, solo and small group practices, to be fairly treated as we provide our patients high quality medical care, ...be provided exemptions from these literally unbearable top down management requirements, ...and be given a place at the country's "transition table". Respectfully, Jeff Taber, MD Rural MN.
