Celebrate National Rural Health Day on Nov. 15
Date: 11-10-2012 [MMA News Now, Oct. 11, 2012] The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health has set aside Nov. 15 as National Rural Health Day. It is an opportunity to bring attention to the unique health care challenges that rural citizens face – and showcase the efforts of rural healthcare providers, State Offices of Rural Health and other rural stakeholders to address those challenges.
In its own ways, the MMA is helping in these efforts. The MMA works to increase the number of rural primary care physicians through its Foundation’s participation in the Minnesota Department of Health's Office of Rural Health and Primary Care’s (ORHPC) Rural Loan Forgiveness Program.
This past summer, the MMA Foundation and ORHPC named two more physicians to their Rural Physician Loan Forgiveness program, which gives new primary care physicians up to $100,000 over four years to help pay down educational debt. As part of the program, the physicians commit to practice in underserved communities in rural Minnesota for at least three years. Over the past several years, the Foundation has awarded financial assistance through the program to physicians in Ortonville, Walker, Perham and Wabasha.
In addition to the rural loan forgiveness program, the MMA works with Component Medical Societies throughout the state to help promote their events to rural physicians and help keep rural physicians connected to colleagues throughout the state.
