MMA Supports Medicaid Expansion

Date: 20-09-2012
[MMA News Now, Sept. 20, 2012] At a Sept. 13 meeting, the MMA urged the Access Work Group of the Governor’s Health Care Reform Task Force to recommend that state leaders support the expansion of Medicaid up to 133 percent of poverty as allowed under the Affordable Care Act.

As part of its recommendation, the MMA pointed out that as Medicaid enrollment increases the demand for care could stress the system. The MMA noted its growing concerns regarding access to care, particularly primary care services.

The MMA also commented that the Work Group has not fully addressed the financial stability of physician practices and other providers serving Medicaid patients.

The MMA asked that the Work Group recommend that the Medicaid fee-for-service fee schedule be increased legislatively on an annual basis and that detailed information about managed care payment rates and trends be tracked and disclosed by the Department of Human Services.
