The MMA bestowed its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, to John Van Etta, M.D., who works in St. Luke’s Internal Medicine department in Duluth. Each year, this award goes to a physician who has made outstanding contributions to medicine and to the MMA during his or her career. Van Etta has been active with the MMA for 30 years, sitting on a variety of committees and task forces as well as serving as its president in 1999.
The MMA President’s Award for leadership went to St. Cloud’s George Schoephoerster, M.D., who currently practices with Geriatric Services of Minnesota, serving a number of nursing homes in central Minnesota. Schoephoerster has been an active member of the MMA for the past 30 years and currently serves on its marketing and communications committee. He is also a member of Stearns Benton County Medical Society, sits on the MEDPAC board of directors and has been involved with the MMA House of Delegates since 1993.
This year’s recipient of the MMA Community Service Award was St. Paul’s Kent Wilson, M.D., for tremendous altruism in his personal life. Wilson has led a community-wide collaborative program called Honoring Choices Minnesota that is designed to help individuals and families engage in conversations about end-of-life care in ways that help people understand their choices and achieve quality care that reflects their wishes. Along with his work on Honoring Choices Minnesota, Wilson has been an active member of the MMA. He first joined in 1974 and served as its president in 1997.
