SCHIP veto override fails

MINNEAPOLIS, January, 24, 2007 - For the second time in three months, House Democrats failed to override President Bush’s veto of an expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), according to news reports.

On Wednesday, the House fell 15 votes shy of the 275 votes it needed to override the president’s veto of the measure that would have expanded the program to cover 10 million children and increased spending by $35 billion over five years.

The failure to override the veto is not expected to cause children to lose insurance coverage. In December, Congress passed a measure to fund the program until March 2009.
