The MMIC and Minnesota Hospital Association will host a webinar on Oct. 14 from noon to 1 p.m. on surgical site infection (SSI), the most common and costly health care-acquired infection.
Titled “The Minnesota Slashing SSI Bundle: Raising the bar to lower the rate,” the webinar will feature Jamie Bakkum-Gamez, M.D., a board-certified gynecologic oncologist at the Mayo Clinic and Chad Robbins, D.O., FACOS, a board-certified general surgeon in Glencoe.
SSI occurs in up to 5 percent of patients undergoing inpatient surgery. Annual costs are estimated at $3.5 billion to $10 billion and the emotional and physical costs to patients are staggering, including lengthened hospital stay, readmission and death.
Experts estimate that up to 60 percent of SSIs are preventable. The Minnesota (MN) Slashing SSI bundle elements were selected by a group of OR professionals and surgeons convened by Minnesota’s Collaborative Healthcare Associated Infection Network (CHAIN). This webinar will help surgeons and health care facilities understand the rationale behind using evidence-based bundle guidelines to prevent SSIs.
