Thirty-five concerned physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other citizens met in St. Cloud on Aug. 18 to discuss the Stearns Benton Medical Society’s effort to deal with prescription opioid abuse in central Minnesota.
The group began by discussing a rough draft
of a community-wide controlled substance prescribing policy.
In addition, the group discussed the need to use the state’s Prescription Monitoring Program, medication treatment agreements, patient prescription risk assessments, the use of opioids for chronic pain, and alternative methods for treating pain among other issues.
Several members of the group were assigned research projects. These assigned physicians will report back to the group when it reconvenes in late September. At that point, the group hopes to finalize a plan and move into the implementation stage.
