Physicians Sought for Medical Cannabis Task Force

[MMA News Now, June 5, 2014] MMA members are encouraged to apply for three health care provider positions on a state-run task force that will tackle medical cannabis therapeutic research. The first meeting will be held before Aug. 1.

The 23-member task force will hold hearings to evaluate the impact of medical cannabis use and evaluate Minnesota's and other states' activities involving the drug. The group will also offer analysis of the program design and implementation; the impact on the health care provider community; patient experiences; the impact on the incidence of substance abuse; access to and quality of medical cannabis and medical cannabis products; the impact on law enforcement and prosecutions; public awareness and perception; and any unintended consequences.

By Feb. 1, 2015, the task force co‚Äźchairs must submit a report to the chairs and ranking minority members of the Legislature on the design and implementation of the registry program, and every two years after are to submit an impact assessment report. In addition, they will submit a completed cost assessment. The task force may make recommendations to the Legislature on whether to add or remove conditions from the list of qualifying medical conditions.

“The task force calls for three health care providers,” said Janet Silversmith, MMA’s director of health policy. “We hope there is strong interest from our members to participate on this group.  This is an important opportunity for physicians to help shape Minnesota’s cannabis program with scientific standards that will support patients, protect public safety, and produce useful research results.”

To apply for the task force, visit the Secretary of State website.

"Therapeutic research" ? What a joke. There are only three physicians on this 23 member task force with the rest being patients, politicians, state employees etc. The legislature has already determined that marijuana has legitimate medical usage for several specific conditions and the task force is organized to support this view. It is a sham and I don't think the MMA should put it's name behind it.
