Physicians Testify at Capitol on Primary Care Workforce

[MMA News Now, March 13, 2014] Legislators recently heard first-hand accounts from health care providers who are addressing the state’s primary care workforce needs.

Jeremy Springer, M.D., an MMA member and chair of its Primary Care Physician Task Force, testified before the house Health and Human Services Finance Committee on March 6. He provided statistics regarding the primary care physician shortage in Minnesota and discussed the factors contributing to the shortage - aging population, a growing population, the retirement of a generation of primary care physicians, decreases in state funding for medical education, a steady or decreasing number of primary care physician residency slots, and a declining interest in primary care careers.

Springer noted how the primary care physician workforce shortage is particularly alarming for those who live in Minnesota’s rural and underserved areas. These are areas that already are in short supply of primary care physicians.

Others who testified included: Mark Schoenbaum, MSW, director, Office of Rural Health & Primary Care, Minnesota Department of Health; Troy Taubenheim, director, Metro Minnesota Council on Graduate Medical Education; and John Andrews, M.D., associate dean for Graduate Medical Education, University of Minnesota Medical School.

The hearing was for information only.

Dr. Reif: The MMA task force does not have a report. There is a Department of Health report on Minnesota's Primary Care Workforce, 2011-2012: http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/orhpc/pubs/workforce/primary.pdf
