Minnesota Physicians Also Hit by Tax Scam

[MMA News Now, May 1, 2014] Since publishing a story in the April 24 MMA News Now, the MMA has heard from more than two dozen physicians from across the state who have been affected by a tax scam directed at doctors.

Minnesota physicians are not alone. Doctors across the country have been hit by a fraudulent federal income tax scam in which unknown parties are filing returns using physicians’ names, addresses and Social Security numbers. Victims have been unable to file their taxes electronically because a return has already been filed.

Notify the MMA if you have been affected by this scam or if you detect unusual or suspicious activity on your credit report. We will forward your contact information (full name, address and phone number) to the U.S. Secret Service, which may contact you as they investigate this matter.

If you have been a victim of this scam you can access tools on the IRS website or call toll-free at 1-800-908-4490.

MMA members should also consider purchasing an identify theft plan from Legal Shield, a service used by MMA staff.
