Franken Co-Chairs Senate Rural Health Caucus

[MMA News Now, May 22, 2014] Sen. Al Franken (DFL-MN) recently took over as co-chair of the Senate Rural Health Caucus, a bi-partisan group with a long history of championing rural health care issues. One of his first acts as the new co-chair was co-sponsor a bipartisan bill on May 20 to help rural communities address the challenges they face providing quality health care.

The bill, called the Craig Thomas Rural Hospital and Provider Equity (R-HoPE) Act of 2014, proposes supporting the efforts of rural health care systems to provide innovative and sustainable health care solutions for patients in rural America. The bill would extend several programs that provide access to hospitals, doctors and ambulance services in rural areas.

“Providing quality health care to Minnesota’s rural communities requires innovative solutions,” Franken said. “We can’t afford to ignore the complexities of health care delivery in our rural communities. Our bipartisan bill will help health providers expand access to quality care, and help ensure that rural residents are afforded the best possible health care regardless of their location.”
