Glen D. Nelson, M.D., a former medical device company and hospital executive, is the recipient of the 2013 Shotwell Award.

Nelson served as executive vice president and subsequently vice chairman of Medtronic, Inc. from 1986 to 2002. Previously, he served as chairman, president and CEO of Park Nicollet Medical Center from 1975 to 1986. Currently, Nelson is focused on long-term job creation by assisting health care startup ventures, particularly in Minnesota.
The Shotwell Award was established by Metropolitan Medical Center in 1971 in recognition of the support and dedication of the Shotwell family, which established the Louise Shotwell Smith leukemia fund for research and the Louise Shotwell Smith and Grace R. Shotwell nursing scholarship funds.
Recipients need to demonstrate:
• Dedicated service to mankind;
• Significant break-through in some form of research or, significant contribution to the field of medicine;
• Innovations and/or improvements in health care delivery, including health care physicians.
