The MMA has recognized obesity as a preventable and treatable disease that is linked to serious chronic conditions including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and cancer. With obesity being second only to tobacco as a cause of preventable death and disease, preventing obesity is a key component of making Minnesota the healthiest state in the nation.
Physicians can help prevent and treat obesity by:
- Calculating each patient's BMI during regular screening exams;
- Following ICSI Guidelines for preventing and treating obesity;
- Telling patients that obesity can be treated; and
- Providing access to medical nutrition, therapy, medications, or surgery.
